How to write the new UCAS personal statement

Since 2026 entry, the personal statement is three questions instead of one essay. Here's what each one wants, plus a free planner that counts your characters as you go.

Plan your three answers

Your drafts stay on this page only and aren't saved or sent anywhere. Copy them somewhere safe before you leave.

  • Name the specific part of the subject that interests you.
  • Back it with one real example: a lesson, book, project or problem you explored.
  • Link it to where you want the course to take you.

0 characters (minimum 350)

  • Pick two or three subjects or topics and the skills they gave you.
  • Mention coursework, an EPQ or a practical you're proud of.
  • Show how this prepares you for the course, not just your grades.

0 characters (minimum 350)

  • Use part-time work, volunteering, caring, clubs or projects.
  • For each, say what you did and what you learned.
  • Keep proof (certificates, references) in your UK Skills Passport™.

Short on things to write for question 3?

Collect your work experience, volunteering, certificates and references in the free UK Skills Passport™, so you have real evidence to write about for UCAS and for apprenticeship applications.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Listing achievements without saying what you learned from them.
  • Repeating the same example across all three answers.
  • Quotes and clichés ("Ever since I was young…") instead of your own reasons.
  • Leaving it to the deadline. Start drafting early and ask a teacher to read it.

Personal statement questions

What are the new UCAS personal statement questions?

From 2026 entry there are three: Why do you want to study this course or subject? How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject? What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

How long is the UCAS personal statement?

4,000 characters in total across the three answers, including spaces, which is roughly 550–700 words. Each answer needs at least 350 characters.

How do I start a UCAS personal statement?

Skip the dramatic opening. Answer the first question directly: what draws you to the subject, with one specific example such as a topic, book, project or experience.

What counts as preparation outside education?

Part-time jobs, volunteering, caring responsibilities, clubs, sport, online courses, work experience and personal projects. Say what you did and what it taught you that's useful for the course.

Can I use AI to write my personal statement?

UCAS says your statement must be your own work and may be checked for similarity. Use tools to plan and check, but write it in your own words.
