Questions people ask

What are the alternatives to university in the UK?
The main routes are apprenticeships (Level 2 up to degree level), Higher Technical Qualifications (Levels 4–5) at colleges, T Levels after GCSEs, school leaver programmes run by employers, going straight into an entry-level job, and a planned gap year. Several of these still lead to a degree later if you want one.
Is university worth it?
It depends on the career you want. Some jobs, such as medicine, require a degree. Many others can be reached through an apprenticeship or work experience, often without tuition fees. Compare the routes into the specific job you want before deciding.
I didn't get my UCAS offer. What can I do?
You can look for another course through UCAS Clearing, which opens in early July and runs to October (check UCAS for this year's exact dates). You can also apply for apprenticeships, Higher Technical Qualifications or jobs at the same time. Missing an offer does not close off your career.
Can I apply through UCAS and for apprenticeships at the same time?
Yes. You can keep a UCAS application open while applying for apprenticeships and jobs. Decide when you have offers in front of you.
Can I get a degree without going to university full-time?
Yes. Degree apprenticeships combine paid work with a bachelor's or master's degree, with training costs paid by the employer and government rather than the apprentice.
What jobs can I get without a degree?
Many skilled and well-paid roles are open without a degree, including trades, engineering technician, digital, healthcare support, business and finance roles, often through an apprenticeship. Shine's free career quiz matches roles to your strengths.
