Privacy Notice
Effective 29 April 2026 · Shine AI Ltd · UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018 compliant.
Your privacy matters. This notice explains — in plain English — what info we collect, why we collect it, who sees it, and the rights you have. If anything is unclear, just ask us.
1. Who we are
Shine AI Ltd is a UK education-technology company. We're the people responsible for looking after your data on this platform (we're the "data controller" under UK GDPR). We're registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
2. Who uses Shine
Candidates: people aged 13 or older exploring careers, training and jobs.
Businesses: employers and partners connecting with candidates.
3. What data we collect
- Your name and contact details (e.g. email).
- Your age or age range.
- What you tell us about education, skills, interests and work experience.
- Things you upload — like a profile photo, evidence of work, or videos.
- Technical data — like the device and browser you use, and how you use the site.
We only ask for what we need.
4. Why we use your data (and our legal basis)
We use your data to:
- Run your account and the platform — contract.
- Match you with relevant opportunities and training — legitimate interests.
- Send important updates about your account — contract.
- Improve and secure Shine — legitimate interests.
- Send marketing or use special features when you say yes — consent.
- Meet legal duties (e.g. responding to authorities) — legal obligation.
5. AI, profiling and automated decisions
Shine uses AI to suggest careers, match you to roles and rank opportunities. This is a form of "profiling" under UK GDPR.
We do not make decisions that have a legal or similarly significant effect on you using AI alone — a human is always involved.
You can ask how a suggestion was made, share your view, and ask for a human review.
6. Who we share data with
- Employers — only the parts of your profile you choose to share when applying or showing interest in a role.
- Trusted service providers — e.g. cloud hosting, AI infrastructure, email delivery. They follow strict contracts.
- Authorities — only if the law requires it (for example, to protect someone from harm).
We never sell your data.
7. International transfers
Some of our service providers operate outside the UK. When data leaves the UK we use approved safeguards (such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Standard Contractual Clauses) to keep it protected.
8. How long we keep your data
We only keep your data for as long as we need it. If you delete your account, we securely remove or anonymise your data, except where the law tells us to keep certain records for longer.
9. How we keep it safe
We use technical and organisational security measures — including encryption, access controls, monitoring, and regular reviews — to protect your data. As part of being compliant with the law, we run a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) on the platform and update it whenever we add features that might affect your privacy.
10. Children & young people (13–17)
Shine is designed for users aged 13 and over. For users under 18 we add extra safeguards: clearer language, stronger privacy defaults, careful data minimisation, and tighter controls on what employers can see. If you're under 16, we recommend chatting with a parent, carer or trusted adult before signing up.
11. Your rights
You have the right to:
- See the data we hold about you.
- Correct anything that's wrong.
- Delete your data ("the right to be forgotten").
- Restrict or object to how we use it.
- Take your data with you (data portability).
- Withdraw consent at any time.
- Make a complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
To use any of these rights, email contact@shineai.tech.
12. Business users — your responsibilities
If you're an employer, you must process candidate data lawfully and fairly, only use it for the purpose it was shared for, and follow UK data protection law.
13. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice from time to time. If something important changes, we'll let you know inside the platform or by email.
