For subject teachers and Careers Leaders

Gatsby Benchmark 4 workshops: link curriculum learning to careers without writing a single slide

Benchmark 4 asks every subject teacher to link their lessons to careers. Most teachers want to, but don't have the time to research jobs, pay and routes for their subject. We do that work for you and deliver it in your lesson.

  • Jobs linked to your subject

Maths, English, science or the subject you choose, including niche roles students have never heard of, not just the obvious ones.

  • Routes in, side by side

A levels, T Levels, apprenticeships, degree apprenticeships and university, so students see more than one way in.

  • What the jobs pay

Typical pay from official sources such as the National Careers Service, so students see the reward for sticking with the subject.

  • Ready-made activities

Real-world challenges that use the subject itself, so the lesson still teaches your subject while linking it to careers.

  • Resources you keep

Slides and student handouts you can reuse with other classes after we've gone.

  • Evidence for your records

A short session summary (subject, year group, roles covered) your Careers Leader can log against Benchmark 4.

What it saves you: no research, no planning, no new resources to make. One booking can cover a whole department in a day, up to 5 classes of 30.

How the workshops support the Gatsby Benchmarks

The statutory guidance asks schools and colleges to meet the eight Gatsby Benchmarks. A Shine workshop counts towards these three:

  • Benchmark 2: Learning from career and labour market information. Sessions use current, official labour market information on pay, demand and entry routes.
  • Benchmark 3: Addressing the needs of each young person. Activities start from each young person's interests and strengths, with an individual action plan.
  • Benchmark 4: Linking curriculum learning to careers. Ask for a subject theme and we show how the knowledge and skills in that subject lead into a wide range of jobs. For Benchmark 4 to be met, subject teachers still need to do this in every subject, every year.

Careers days and sessions for every setting

  • Secondary schools and sixth forms: careers days, PSHE and drop-down days
  • FE colleges: tutorial programmes and progression weeks
  • Youth clubs and community groups: evening or holiday sessions
  • Charities supporting young people, including those not in education, employment or training

Careers workshop questions from Careers Leaders

How much does a Shine careers workshop cost?
An online workshop for up to 30 young people costs £150. A full day of up to five workshops, each for up to 30, costs £750. Shine is not VAT-registered, so no VAT is added.
Do charities get a discount?
Yes. Registered charities get 20% off: £120 for an online workshop or £600 for a full day. We'll ask for your charity number when you book.
Which Gatsby Benchmarks does a careers workshop support?
Benchmarks 2 and 3, and Benchmark 4 when you ask for a subject theme. Benchmark 2 because sessions use current, official labour market information and every young person leaves with next steps. Benchmark 3 because activities start from each young person's interests and strengths and challenge career stereotypes. Benchmark 4 when we theme a session around a subject and the roles it leads to. Our subject workshops are built specifically to help subject teachers evidence Benchmark 4.
Can you run a Benchmark 4 workshop for subject teachers?
Yes. We run subject-themed workshops in maths, English, science or another subject you choose. We show students the jobs that use that subject, the routes in (A levels, T Levels, apprenticeships, university) and what those jobs pay, with ready-made activities. Teachers keep the slides and handouts to reuse, and get a short summary they can log as Benchmark 4 evidence. Same prices: £150 online or £750 for a full day.
Can you run a careers day or drop-down day at our school?
Yes. A full day covers up to five workshops of up to 30 young people for £750, so you can run a careers day, drop-down day or subject department day with one booking. Tell us the year groups and topics when you book.
How do Careers Leaders evidence Benchmark 4 from a workshop?
After a subject workshop we provide a short session summary showing the subject, year group, number of young people and roles covered, which your Careers Leader can log as evidence of linking curriculum learning to careers.
Can a careers adviser or guidance counsellor book for their students?
Yes. Careers advisers, guidance counsellors and Careers Leaders can book directly, and we shape the session around your group's needs and the topics you want covered.
Who can book?
Schools, sixth forms, colleges, youth clubs, charities and community groups anywhere in the UK working with young people.
How many young people can attend?
Up to 30 per group. A full day covers up to five groups.
Can you tailor the content?
Yes. Tell us the age group, needs and topics you'd like when you book and we'll shape the session around them.
