One date, two very different Januarys
Every year, thousands of Year 13 students plan their autumn around the main UCAS deadline in January — and only find out in September that the course they actually want closes on 15 October. If you are thinking about medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, or any course at Oxford or Cambridge, that early deadline is yours.
What the 15 October deadline covers
- Medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science — at almost every UK university
- Every course at Oxford and Cambridge
You can still apply to other courses too, but your whole application — including the personal statement and your school's reference — must be submitted by 15 October at 6pm. Miss it and you wait a full year.
What to do in the next two weeks
- Register on UCAS now and start the application — the form takes longer than you think.
- Ask your referee this week. Teachers write dozens of references; the ones asked in September write better ones.
- Finish the personal statement early so someone can read it with fresh eyes.
- Check admissions tests. Medicine needs the UCAT; several Oxbridge courses have their own tests with September registration deadlines.
The route nobody mentions in the same breath
Here is what surprises people: while your school talks about the October deadline, the NHS medical doctor degree apprenticeship and paid apprenticeship routes into nursing, paramedic science and healthcare science are opening their own application windows this autumn. These pay you a salary from day one with no tuition fees.
They are not a backup — they are a different front door into the same careers, and almost nobody applies to both. You can hold a UCAS application and apply for apprenticeships at the same time.
