When I was recruiting for agencies like Carbon60, I placed people into roles most teenagers have never seen advertised — because nobody puts "crane operator" or "BIM technician" on a careers poster. So here are three that pay well, train you on the job, and don't need you to go into debt first.
Crane operator. Trainees and assistants typically start on £26,000–£35,000, with experienced operators earning £38,000–£55,000 and senior specialists reaching £55,000–£70,000+ (freelance day rates run roughly £220–£450). You'll need a CPCS or NPORS operator card and the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test — both achievable through a construction apprenticeship rather than years of study.
Construction estimator. This is the person who works out what a project will actually cost before a spade goes in the ground — equal parts maths and negotiation. Trainee/assistant estimators start around £22,000–£32,000, rising to £38,000–£52,000 with experience and £55,000–£70,000+ in senior roles. Apprentice Estimator vacancies come up regularly through the Find an Apprenticeship service — no construction site experience required to start.
BIM technician. BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the digital model that architects, engineers and site teams all work from — if you like tech and design more than muddy boots, this is your route into construction. Entry-level pay starts from around £24,000, with experienced BIM practitioners earning up to £52,000. You can get in through an apprenticeship from age 16, or via a college BIM course.
Worth knowing before you apply: apprentice pay is protected by law — a minimum of £8/hour in your first year (2026–27 rate), rising to your full age rate after that, and most construction employers pay above the minimum once you're contributing on-site.
